The Ultimate Guide to a Hot Girl Summer

Updated: Jun 10

"Hot Girl Summer I ain't f*cking with no drama!"

- Megan The Stallion

The definition of Hot Girl Summer (HGS) could vary from person to person, but in this case let’s define it as living your best life. My idea of a HGS is traveling with friends, making new friends, and practicing a new hobby! Now I am well aware that we are still in the midst of a pandemic and I have personally decided to get vaccinated so that I can have these liberties.

So, here are some of the ways that I feel can help you achieve the Ultimate Hot Girl Summer.

I truly hope this list inspires you to live your best life!

Change Your Hair Color

I’ve always wanted to experiment with color in my hair but I was so worried about what others would think about me because of it. I also worked in corporate America and it was frowned upon. However, after my spiritual awakening and the new found ability to not care about what others think, I went pink.

If you are still judging people for vibrant and colorful hair styles, I need you to grow up. Having colored hair doesn’t make you unprofessional and it shouldn’t be deemed as such. I am still able to communicate effectively, focus on time sensitive projects, and manage multiple tasks even when my hair is soft lavender hue. As a Black woman, I constantly change my hairstyles and I can confidentially say that I feel like a new woman every time I get a new look. My attitude when I have box braids is not the same when my hair is in a short bob. Those are two different Meagans! I am so glad that I finally took the plunge and gave it a try because I love it! That actually may be an understatement. I’m obsessed! I was worried that some of my colorful outfits would clash with the color of my hair but everything matches surprisingly well.

If you are looking for a fun change, get adventurous and try a color that you’ve always wanted to try! Whether its an all over color or subtle highlights I can bet it will bring you some joy and make your inner child smile. I am a firm believer that we have the right to express ourselves creatively and dying your hair a magenta pink or bright green could be a great way to do just that.

Travel With Your Friends or by yourself

Being in the house all last year to reduce the spread of Covid was rough but necessary. I missed exploring new places and now that I am able to, it’s the first thing to do on my HGS to-do list. I got the opportunity to visit New Orleans with some friends in March (give the article a read here.) and visited my sister in Hawaii in May. Now all I want to do is travel as much as possible. I love being exposed to the history and culture of somewhere new and always look forward to getting lost in new places. Stay tuned as we will be dropping a Single Girl's Guide to Solo Travel soon.

With all this traveling I have planned I’m keeping my fingers crossed for the Explore America Tax Credit to pass. It can help boost the travel industry and will allow you to deduct a majority of our travel expenses if you’re traveling within the United States. So once it passes (staying optimistic) I’m allowing myself to take even more trips that I’ve always wanted to and encourage you to do the same whether it’s a week or weekend trip.

Pick Up a New Hobby

A new hobby can help you to develop a new skill. I’ve finally decided to give baking a try at the worst moment possible. It gets pretty hot here in Los Angeles and I really don’t like using the stove for any reason while its 90+ degrees outside. Plus, it doesn't really help me shrink my waist line. However, I have found a way to reduce the calories in some of my favorite treats and I feel it has helped fuel my creativity and has increased my resourcefulness. Additionally, I have started to garden more and I have gotten so much joy from it. I love witnessing growth in my Monstera plant and jump for joy when a new leaf uncoils. Gardening has aided me in all areas of my life by helping me to understand that growth takes time. The more consistent I am with my plants the more growth I see and I have applied that same logic to all of my goals. Results don't happen overnight but if you continue to put in the effort, growth will come.

Practice Self Care

This wouldn’t be a Single Girl Club post if I didn’t mention self-care! I preach that it should be a part of everyone’s daily practice and I’m including it in our HGS guide too! Self-care can be physical and/or mental. Whether it's pampering yourself with a good massage, aligning your energy and calming your nerves through meditation or just simply reading your favorite book. Taking the necessary time to keep yourself grounded is vital. During singleness, most of us have the luxury to be more selfish because we are only caring for ourselves. This season is the perfect opportunity to put our needs first. If you’re a parent, I implore you to take some time to do something for yourself this summer too, as it will help create balance in your life. Sometimes you need to take a break from the kids and that’s okay.

Additionally, Single Girl Club is a therapy STAN platform. It has helped me so much in my personal and professional life and I want everyone to experience the same freedom that it has given me. So take some time to sit down with your therapist and if you need help finding one check out the platforms below.

Set Some Boundaries

Saving the best one for last! Ideally, I would like to go to every event that happens this summer but the way that my Cancer sun personality works it just won’t allow me. Learn to set solid boundaries and say no when you aren't up for something instead of saying yes to please everyone else. Carve out some time for yourself and your goals. Just because we are having fun this summer it doesn’t mean that we can put all of our personal goals to the side. We still need to work on them so it’s important to create a nice balance between business and pleasure. Hot Girls have boundaries, period.

I hope these ideas help you have the best time this year! I'd love to hear some ways that you plan on having the Ultimate Hot Girl Summer, please let me know in the comment section! I would love to know and get inspired by your plans too! As always, thank you for reading and supporting the Single Girl Club Platform. If this post has inspired you or made you smile please share with your single girl family and friends!
